Of course ‘a couple’ usually means ‘two’ but in story telling this can also be used to tell of a non-specific date in the past that wasn’t long ago. If you feel that the time of the story was too long ago, e.g. 6 years ago or 4 years ago etc, use this and it doesn’t become a problem.
If the story IS a long time ago, e,g, 10 years or 20 years ago, we can replace it with ‘A few years ago’ to make it non-specific.
